CPT in partnership with the Department for Transport are hosting an online summit on 16 September to examine the issue of women’s safety on buses.

With passenger safety a top priority for operators and government the event will hear from transport minister Rachel Maclean MP in the Government’s plans to work with industry to help ensure women are confident and feel safe to travel by bus.

Delegates will also hear from Women in Transport as well as operators including Transdev, Brighton Buses and National Express and CPT President Jane Cole about initiatives they have put in place to help aid passenger confidence, including for example, safer travel partnerships with local police forces.

This event is a chance for operators to learn from each other and start developing industry wide measures to help provide security and reassurance to women and others travelling by bus. The event is exclusively for CPT members and invited stakeholders and operators will need to register in advance to be able to attend.

Commenting on the launch of this event CPT Chief Executive Graham Vidler said:

“I’m delighted that CPT is hosting this important event in partnership with the Department for Transport.

“It will provide a focal point of operators to share best practice and learn from each other on what we can do to ensure that passengers, and in particular female passengers, feel safe travelling on the bus and importantly know what they can do should harassment take place.”

On the Department for Transport’s involvement Transport Minister Rachel Maclean MP said:

“I am determined to do all that we can to ensure women and girls are safe when they use the transport network. While the Department already works closely with partners on a range of initiatives to improve safety on the network, I am keen that we do more.

“I look forward to working with the broad range of stakeholders over the coming months, including CPT and the Department’s new Violence Against Women and Girls Transport Champions. This is critical work and I know we can achieve great things together.”
