The Confederation of Passenger Transport has responded to the Chancellor's latest measures to combat the cost of living, which includes a free bus fares proposition ofr children over the summer.

Graham Vidler, Chief Executive of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, said:

“Buses are a green, affordable and convenient way to travel. Any initiative that encourages families to catch a bus when they’re out and about this summer is welcome.

“CPT and the industry will work closely with the Government, local authorities and frontline staff on the detail of this voluntary scheme, to ensure that it can deliver on its objectives without detriment to the quality of service that 11m passengers, young and old, rely on every day.

“In any promotion offering free travel to young people, it is vital to ensure that the safeguarding of unaccompanied children travelling for free is properly considered. We also need to ensure that capacity is taken into account to avoid overcrowding on popular routes.

“Bus operators have faced spiralling costs over recent months. The price of diesel has risen by more than 30% since the conflict in Iran began, putting a strain on the viability of many services. And reimbursement for the £3 English national fare cap has failed to keep up with inflation.

“We are pleased, therefore, that the Government has come forward with a broader package of support for bus services and CPT looks forward to liaising with the Department for Transport on the detail.”
