The Confederation of Passenger Transport Cymru (CPT Cymru) is pleased to announce that Matthew Williams formally took up the role of Head of CPT Cymru earlier this month.

Matt joins CPT Cymru from the Welsh Sports Association, where he served as Head of Policy and Advocacy since 2020, leading on policy development, stakeholder engagement, strategy and communications. He has also previously worked as a senior policy adviser to a Member of the Senedd and as a policy adviser at Federation of Small Businesses.

Commenting on his appointment, Matthew Williams said: “I’m delighted to take up this role at such an important moment for passenger transport in Wales. Having worked across a number of sectors navigating significant political, policy and economic change, I’m looking forward to getting under the skin of the industry quickly and working closely with members, government and partners across Wales.

“The incoming Welsh Government faces both long-term structural challenges and immediate pressures. Bus franchising presents a major opportunity for Wales, but it will require careful and collaborative delivery. At the same time, rising fuel costs linked to instability in the Middle East are creating real pressures for operators. My priority will be to secure early wins for members while helping to build a constructive, long-term relationship between the industry, government and its agencies.”

Graham Vidler, Chief Executive of CPT, said: “Matt joins CPT Cymru at a hugely significant time for bus and coach services in Wales. His strong background in policy, advocacy and stakeholder engagement will be a major asset as the industry works with the new Welsh Government on the future of public transport.

“He brings a clear understanding of the Welsh policy landscape, a collaborative approach and a real enthusiasm for the role. We are delighted to welcome him to CPT and look forward to working with him to champion the interests of operators and passengers across Wales.”

CPT Cymru Administrator Ian Barlow, who has worked closely with Matt ahead of his arrival, added: “It has been great working with Matt over the past few weeks to ensure that he is able to hit the ground running. We have many challenges to face in Wales, including the future provision of bus services and the recent major increases in the cost of fuel and other oil-based products.

“Matt has already demonstrated a strong awareness of these issues and I have no doubt that his knowledge and enthusiasm will serve CPT members in Wales extremely well.”
