CPT has reacted to the Budget and Spending Review announced today by the Chancellor

On bus

"The funding announced today, including the potential for £100s of millions of funding allocated to cities to transform their transport services being spent on bus, will help revolutionise bus services in our major cities.

“In support of what is a national bus strategy, however, we need to make sure that passengers in smaller cities and towns across the country can benefit from better bus services too. We must avoid a two-tier system where smaller cities and towns are starved of investment for the priorities they set out in their plans with operators to improve services.

“The funding announced today for zero emission buses gives a welcome immediate boost to bus manufacturing. Beyond this year, however, the scale of funding raises serious questions over the speed at which the Prime Minister’s five year plan to deliver 4000 zero emission buses can be delivered.”

On coach

“Despite contributing £14bn to UK tourism the Treasury has inexplicably once again failed to provide support to the coach sector while helping other parts of the tourism sector with a business rates discount.

“The coach sector should be provided with the same support given to other parts of the tourism sector recognising its crucial role in getting millions of people to attractions and destinations and supporting jobs and growth across the country.”
