On Wednesday 1 December beginning at 10:00 and finishing at 15:30 CPT will be hosting this virtual decarbonising coaches event that will examine current barriers operators face when it comes to decarbonising their fleets, covering vehicles, infrastructure and financing.

10:00 Introduction: Duncan Aspinall, Chair

10:05 Key note speaker – Baroness Vere, Transport Minister

Baroness Vere will provide a keynote address on the Government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan and what it means for coach.

10:35 Session 1 – Vehicles – Duration 1 hour  

This session will look at the zero emission technologies that are currently available, identify the challenges to introducing them into fleets, including operation, range and payload capacity, and discuss how these can be overcome.

Speaker 1: Richard Ball, New Vehicles Director, National Express 

National Express have a target for their coach fleet to be completely zero emission by 2035, and will present on how they decided on the target and their strategy to achieve it.  

Speaker 2: Ian Downie, Head of Yutong Bus UK

Speaker 3: Daniel Hayes, Project Manager at Zemo Partnership will outline the asks of government that are needed to ensure the industry can successfully transition to zero emission vehicles.

12:00 Session 2 – Infrastructure – Duration 1 hour 

The second session will discuss the infrastructure needed to support a zero emission fleet, including the need for on route electric charging or hydrogen refueling stations on our road network as well as affordable at depot solutions.

Speaker 1- Steven Meersman, Founder Director at Zenobe will provide information on their electric charging solution, how it has worked for the bus industry and how it could be applied to coaches. 

Speaker 2 - Russell Fowler senior project manager Transport Decarbonisation from National Grid

Speaker 3 - Andrew Wescott, Head of Regulatory and External Affairs at Addison Lee will outline how they plan to achieve their target of transitioning their 4,000 car fleet to electric, what challenges they faced when agreeing their strategy and how these were overcome to see if there are any lessons that can be applied to the coach sector.

14:00 Session 3 – Finance – Duration 1 hour 

This session will explore what is needed to reduce the higher purchase price of zero emission vehicles. Speakers will discuss what is needed to develop an affordable business case for zero emission coaches.

Speaker 1- Steven Meersman, Founder Director at Zenobe will discuss their current finance solutions for buses and discuss what is needed in order to develop an affordable business case for zero emission coaches.

Speaker 2- Lauren Pamma, Programme Director at Green Finance Institute will present how partnered working between the public and private sectors could help support the sectors’ transition to zero emission vehicles. 

Speaker 3- Gary Mason, Engineering Director at Nottingham City Transport. Nottingham City Transport have experience of funding projects and will present on how partnership funding applications could help finance a transition to lower carbon technologies.
