The CPT Cost Monitor has been reporting on industry costs since 2022. It has been designed to track changes in bus and coach costs, to gather detailed data to support our work representing the sector, and to enable contributing operators to benchmark their costs against industry averages. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, CPT operated a cost index for many years but changes in volume of bus and coach operations due to the pandemic meant this index couldn’t continue; CPT Cost Index reports are available here. We wanted to ensure that any new index not only provided a robust analysis of changes in industry costs but also provided us and contributors with excellent new data.
Cost Monitor reports are available for 2022 (used as a baseline) and for February & June each year since. We aim to publish each report within three months of the period covered but data submission delays and comprehensive accuracy checks can lead to reports being published later.
Operators can submit data using a relatively straightforward one-page Excel sheet (or using an online form) and we encourage all operators – bus and coach - to contribute. Those who submit data will receive a full report with a wealth of industry cost information that will help them benchmark their business against others.
The reports are used by governments at different levels, including national, to identify changes in industry costs.
All operator data is treated confidentially, and we use respected industry consultant Chris Cheek of 2FM to collate and analyse the data for us. If you would like to contribute, please contact operations@cpt-uk.org
