November 04 2024
The November 2024 CPT Driver Shortage Survey is now open and although presented in the usual format, we have shortened the survey in an effort to make it quicker and easier for you to complete.
The last (July) survey showed worsening of the driver shortage, with bus at 5.3%, and coach 9.5%. Recent efforts by operators to increase service provision, in both the bus, and coach sectors, has had an impact. Previous surveys had showed slight improvement, which we believe to have been in relation to new approaches to recruitment, training and retention made by operators. Evidently, our sector still suffers this huge issue and we can only track the ongoing problem with your help.
The November 2024 survey has again been implemented in agreement with the Department for Transport (DfT). DfT has recently told us that, due to resource constraints and prioritisation within the Government, it may become more challenging to take forward initiatives in support of our sector. This means that it is more important than ever to make sure that we substantiate the industry position.
The survey follows the same format as previous versions, being structured to be simple and quick to complete. There are only 13 questions in total, with core questions taking just a few minutes. There are nine questions in the base survey – these include the company name and base traffic area.
Even if your driver position is unchanged, is improved, or you aren’t suffering a shortage, it would really help us if you could spend two minutes to complete the core questions. We're looking for more coach operator members to assist in better substantiating the coach sector position.
Please note that your survey answers are confidential within CPT unless indicated on the form – we shall share regional and national data with the DfT and Welsh & Scottish Governments but would not provide them with anything that allows identification of a particular operator where not permitted.
The November 2024 survey can be accessed here and will remain open until 17:00hrs on Monday 18 November.
As previously, we have asked representatives of Arriva, First Bus, Go Ahead, National Express and Stagecoach to provide data for their organisations on a group basis, with a separate invitation being provided to relevant team members.
Please note, in the survey we ask if you are primarily a bus or coach operator. If your business operates buses and coaches, we’re happy to accommodate separate responses to cover each part of the business. Please get in touch using the email address below to arrange a second method of survey completion.
Thank you for your ongoing support with this vital exercise.
If you require further assistance with the survey, please contact the Operations Team.
