I am sure we are all delighted that the UK economy is on the mend. It’s great that the recession is behind us. We need a strong, dynamic economy in which everyone can share the benefits. We also need vibrant communities in which everyone can take part and enjoy a good quality of life.

For those reasons, we can agree with the aims of concessionary bus travel. Free bus passes enable many older people and people with disabilities to lead lives that are more active and fulfilling. We must be clear, however, that spending on such schemes gives good value for money to the taxpayer.
