CPT News Release: Chesterfield Awarded CPT's 'Coach Friendly' Status

Published: 25-02-2013

The Confederation of Passenger Transport UK (CPT), the trade association representing the UK’s bus, coach and light rail industries, has today announced that Chesterfield has been awarded with its prestigious ‘Coach Friendly’ status.

The Award, as recommended by CPT’s coach operator members in the East Midlands, acknowledges the commitment Chesterfield has made to understanding the requirements of coaches and welcoming their drivers and passengers to the Borough.

Commenting on the announcement, Keith McNally, CPT’s East Midlands Regional Manager said: “We are delighted to announce that Chesterfield is the first location in the East Midlands to receive this accolade.

“Our coach friendly award, launched in 2003, has been designed to recognise and reward the efforts of UK towns and cities, along with tourist attractions and local authorities, who go that extra mile to encourage and accommodate coach tourism.

“Chesterfield clearly appreciates the vital role that coaches and their passengers play in helping to boost the local economy. We look forward to working closely with Chesterfield as they reap the benefits that this prestigious Award will bring to them and the local economy.”

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council’s executive member for leisure, culture and tourism said: “Chesterfield with its crooked spire, markets, theatres and tourist attractions has always attracted visitors and I am delighted that CPT has recognised the work that has gone into making the town centre a popular tourist attraction.

“We have introduced measures including reserved parking for coaches, town centre guides and tours for passengers as well as proper rest facilities for drivers.

“We received more than 500 coach parties to the town in 2012 and we look forward to receiving many more this year.”
